Not many SLans here in ‘diff. Met an old guy and some people during an SL society meeting. I didn’t go after that. Mainly, ‘cos i was too lazy but there was another reason.

In undergrad I didn’t have much of a choice in terms of hanging out with Sri Lankans cos my gf or ‘partner’ at the time (as they would refer to it in politically correct SF) was a Lankan…it was a decent experience, though most of them weren’t really my ‘dial.’ Generally too geeky and took themselves faaar to seriously….

I try and make an effort with Sri Lankans but refuse to hang out with idiots just cos their Lankan…some expat Lankans though do judge you just because your Lankan and become all snooty, that really pisses me off…

Rusty: See, it’s not just the parents. There are people of subsequent generations with the same outlook. I don’t get it

Darwin: See, the “known by friend” method of safelisting people is one I prefer to employ too. At the very least, that guarantees there aren’t any awkward silences once you find out where the guy is from etc

Many SL folk in bonnie Scotland? I would have thought not.

I was open minded about the meeting fellow-lankans when I first started uni but within two months of meeting a few arrogant irritating pompous self righteous ego-maniacal morons I could never relate to, I changed my mind. Now, unless that person is actually known to me through a friend, I respond with a mental note to self “must avoid at all costs” rather than the disinterested/distrust approach you do when told ‘Oh I met a Sri Lankan”
